PAY ATTENTION TO THE WARNING SIGNS

Almost immediately after she started her new job, Amy’s manager quit. With no real guidance, Amy tried to keep her head above water, unsure of whom to go to when she needed support. So she did the best she could, staying quiet, and hoping that she was doing what was expected of her. Things seemed to pay off when, six months later, Amy was asked to work on a special new initiative, run by a team that brought together people from various departments. This would be a chance to get some real experience under her belt and show that she was capable of taking on more complex work. However, it quickly became apparent that she was expected to continue her current role with no accommodations made for the additional work she was taking on. Amy started coming in two hours early and staying later than most of her peers. Her days were now consumed by meetings for this new role, with little time for her to do the work she was actually hired to do. She was now effectively working two full-time jobs with no additional pay, no title change, and no end in sight.

Time away from the office provided no reprieve; when she wasn’t working, she was still thinking about working. On top of the pressure from her superiors, Amy also felt a personal responsibility to the 70,000 people her company provided healthcare coverage for. If she made even a minor mistake, it could cause serious negative consequences in someone’s life. She began to experience insomnia, lying in bed, going over and over all the things she needed to get done at work the next day. When she finally did fall asleep, she’d wake up a few hours later, her mind racing.

Working on two teams, Amy constantly felt pulled in different directions. She knew that confirming priorities with the project lead would probably help, but she was concerned that in bringing up her workload, she might be looked at as if she weren’t up for the challenge, or worse, incompetent. So she pushed through, rationalizing that if she just kept working hard she would eventually be rewarded. She calculated that exhausting herself in the short term was a small price to pay in service of what would hopefully be long-term payoff.
